Easter Holidays

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Opodo have run a report on where is best for Easter holidays this year - and have suggested Cyprus as one of the destiantions to consider. They say:

Holidaymakers who are hoping to enjoy some sun during a getaway in April have been encouraged to head south to destinations such as Cyprus and Egypt.

Travel guide portal Simonseeks released an Easter holiday guide which pointed out that spring can be a ‘tricky time of year’ in weather terms.

While Mediterranean beach destinations are being marketed by tourist boards and operators, the site revealed that places like Mallorca, the Algarve and Spain’s Costa del Sol can still have unsettled weather.

With average temperatures of 21C in Cyprus and the Canary Islands and up to 28C in Sharm el Sheikh, Simonseeks encouraged sun seekers to consider a trip to these destinations, all of which offer a flight time of five hours or less.

The company also highlighted the importance of timing holidays well in April, as prices will be higher on the first weekend in the month after schools break up for Easter.

Climate Change And Cyprus

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Reuters recently ran an article about how climate change could affect Cyprus. Here’s an extract:

“Climate change is going to affect this region in a relatively strong way, and differently than northern Europe,” said Jos Lelieveld, a professor in atmospheric sciences at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center at the non-profit Cyprus Institute.

Cyprus has a tourism intake of more than two million each year, attracted by its almost year-round sunshine and stunning beaches. The sector represents about 11 percent of its economy. But its key selling point, the sun, could be a malady if forecasts on changing weather patterns prove to be correct.

“For the tourist sector the summer seasons may become less attractive,” said Lelieveld, who is also a director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany.
